While August is time when many people like to take their summer vacations, whenever you decide to “get away from it all,” it is important to remember that pets should be included in your vacation plans as well. Whether you decide to take your pets with you or leave them at home, below are some tips that should help you and your pets have a safe and relaxing holiday.
A week or two before hitting the road or hopping a flight, get your pets examined by a veterinarian to make sure they are healthy and ready to travel and are current on any vaccinations they may need.
- Make sure your pet has a current identification tag attached to his collar and consider having your pet microchipped.
- If you are bringing your pet with you, make sure you choose a pet friendly vacation rental and bring items that will keep your pet safe and happy holiday such as: food and water bowls, pet food, health certificate, your pet’s favorite toys, extra towels and sheet, any medications your pet will need, contact information for your veterinarian and a recent picture in case your pet gets lost.
- A month or so before your vacation, make sure you check with any kennel where you are considering boarding your pet about any vaccination requirements and polices that you may need to plan for in anticipation of boarding your pet with that facility.
- If you hire a house sitter to care for your pets, make sure that person knows how to get in touch with both you and your veterinarian in case of an emergency.
